  • Specialist wetlands studies, as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the South Sudan Bor-Malakal Road and Dyke Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project, Sudan. This study was undertaken on behalf of the World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations;
  • Wetland Specialist Study and Impact Assessment for the proposed Kamoa Copper Project; for Golder Associated Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);
  • Wetland Ecological Assessment and Report: Proposed Mkuju Uranium Mine: Ruvuma, Tanzania; for Epoch Resources;
  • Specialist wetland studies for a project on the protection of the Orange-Senqu Water Sources - SPONGE (Project) for GOPA on behalf of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ);
  • Specialist consulting on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, Phase 1A and 1B, involving the surveying and mapping the wetlands of the Katse and Mohale Dam catchments in Lesotho for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA).;
  • Assessment of the impact of the SASOL Gas Pipeline on wetlands, river crossings and drainage lines in Mozambique. This covered a distance of 350km between the Temane gas fields in Mozambique to Komatipoort in South Africa. WCS also assisted with the development of the environmental management plan and rehabilitation measures associated with the project in Mozambique;
  • Wetland and riparian assessment along a section of the Mokhotlong - Sani Pass Road, Lesotho; for Earth. Inc.
  • Wetland specialist study and Impact Assessment for the PSPF Office Park Development, Mbabane, Swaziland; for Stauch Vorster Architects and Liberty Properties Swaziland;
  • Riparian and wetland component of the Elephants River Reserve Determination Study; for Pulles Howard and De Lange Incorporated and the government of Mozambique;
  • Wetland specialist for the development of re-vegetation specifications for a wetland restoration project within selected watersheds of the Butha-Buthe and Mokhotlong Districts of Lesotho; for LRI for the Millenium Challenge Account and Water Affairs, Lesotho;
  • Investigation of waste stream separation, effluent treatment and water recovery, for African Distilleries, Harare Zimbabwe;
  • Waste and effluent audit, Monapo Oil processing and soap manufacturing facility, Mozambique;
  • Investigation relating to the optimisation of effluent management and treatment, Big Bend Sugar Estate, Swaziland;
  • Specialist consultant on the wastewater treatment plant and effluent impact assessment for the MOZAL expansion project in Mozambique; and
  • Specialist wastewater treatment system design for numerous lodges in Madikwe and Welgevonden Game Reserves in South Africa, in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana, in Mozambique, and for certain concessionaires in the Kruger National Park.

Research Projects:

  • Development methodologies for a national wetland inventory for South Africa which was undertaken on behalf of the national Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism;
  • Developed national and regional protocols for wetland rehabilitation, including for the Eastern Cape estuaries (on behalf of the South African Water Research Commission) and the national Working for Wetlands initiative currently sponsored by the South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism;
  • Mapping and characterisation of peat eco-regions in South Africa, undertaken on behalf of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the South African national Department of Agriculture.
  • An evaluation of the ability of wetlands to reduce pollutants under simulated flood conditions, for a Water Research Commission funded project, South Africa;
  • A feasibility study on the use of wetlands to treat non-point source pollution associated with a fertilizer plant, South Africa;
  • An investigation into the assimilative capacity of the Wonderfonteinspruit wetland, South Africa;
  • An investigation into the mass pollutant fluxes in the Blesbokspruit wetland, South Africa

Artificial Wetland Design:

  • Planning, design and planting of the wetland system at the National Botanical Gardens in Pretoria South Africa;
  • Design of the Jacana Bay wetland system, Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa;
  • Feasibility assessment and concept design of an artificial wetland system for dealing with decant water from a proposed Coal Bed Methane Project, South Africa;
  • Concept design of the Century City wetland system, Cape Town, South Africa;
  • Investigation into the feasibility of using wetlands to treat the decant from sediment removed from Centurion Lake, Centurion, South Africa;
  • Conceptual designs for the incorporation of wetlands for recreation and stormwater management, Moroka Park, Soweto, South Africa; and
  • An assessment of the use of wetlands to treat stormwater runoff associated with a synthetic fuel manufacturing facility at SASOL Synfuels, South Africa
